Is this a new product?
No, in fact, SPF roofing received it’s first UL rating in 1964, years before EPDM roof systems.
How long has this product been a round?
Otto Bayer discovered and refined polyurethane foam technologies in the 1930’s.
Does it work in the north?
Yes, we have been installing SPF roofs successfully in the northern regions of country since 1979. There is no scientific evidence to suggest that properly installed SPF roof systems do not work in the north.
Can you walk on it?
Yes, typical SPF used for roofing develops 40-50psi compressive strength. This is twice the compressive strength used in other insulation boards. Your residential refrigerator exerts 50psi per support so the SPF used for roofing is designed to accommodate moderate roof traffic.
Do birds eat it?
Early SPF roof designs were susceptible to occasional mechanical damage by birds (crows and seagulls). This phenomenon has been stopped with the inclusion of granule surfacing embedded into the top coat.
How tough or durable is it?
SPF roof systems are very durable. Typical mechanical damage can be repaired with a cartridge of sealant. Should the system be damaged, they typically do not leak as the damage would need to penetrate the full thickness of the insulation. Systems can be designed to have extremely high impact resistance including FM Severe Hail ratings.
Why do you have to coat it?
SPF insulation is not UV stable. Utilizing a protective coating prevents UV deterioration, enhances waterproofing and provides for Class A fire ratings.
Can you put it on…?
SPF is extremely adaptable to virtually any situation and will adhere to most common building materials. As long as we can provide a clean, dry and sound substrate we can generally install the system over it.
How much does it cost?
Each situation has it’s own unique challenges that cause the prices to fluctuate. We compete with all the viable and high performing commercial roofing systems.
So you can just spray it on?
It is almost that simple…everything needs to be properly prepared but basically we spray the new roof on creating a custom, monolithic and seamless roof system.
How do you protect it?
Recommended industry accepted routine roof maintenance is all that is necessary.
What fire rating does it have?
The most common assemblies we install have a Class A rating per UL 790.
How long does it last?
Inevitably, seriously! The SPF roof system is the only truly renewable and sustainable roof system available. The initial and preceding warranties can be extended with a simple roof renewal process that costs a fraction of the initial investment.
Can I do this myself?
We do not recommend it. It might seem simple but like with any profession, it takes years of experience to do things correctly.
Why does it look like the moon?
Early on, the system had some less than showcase installations by individuals who were not properly trained and created “ugly” roofs. It is a fluid applied system which inherently will not be a smooth as a sheet good, but a properly trained and experienced technician can install a very aesthetically pleasing SPF roof system.
Can you fix ponding water with it?
Absolutely, one of the major attributes of the system is the ability to create a custom sloping configuration that eliminates ponding water.
How much does it weigh?
The typical installation weighs less the one pound per square foot.
Do puddles or “birdbaths” hurt it?
No. These areas dry rapidly and do not have a negative impact on the system.
What are the color options?
Just like Henry Ford said, “you can have any color you want as long as it is black”. The standard color is light grey which provides the best of both worlds from a heat gain and reflectivity standpoint. White is a standard color too. Acrylic coatings can be used should a custom color be required.
Why does no one else do this?
Many do, the ones willing to invest the time in training and capital for the correct equipment are very successful.
Why is this system better than the others?
SPF roof systems are sustainable and renewable. Independent third party Life Cycle Analysis indicates that SPF provides the best return on investment. No seams, creates a monolithic blanket of insulation and waterproofing. Ultra-high energy efficient insulation reduces energy demand and equipment maintenance expenses. Environmentally responsible low VOC protective coatings and zero-ozone depleting with ultra low GWP products.
