The Foundry (Medina, OH) – Historic Building Roof Restoration with Spray Foam

Greg PalyaProject Profiles

Introduction

Nestled in Medina, Ohio, The Foundry Social & High Voltage Indoor Karting operates out of a beautifully restored building originally built in the 1870s.

When roof leaks and aging materials threatened the integrity of this historic structure, West Roofing Systems stepped in with a spray polyurethane foam (SPF) restoration — reinforcing the roof, preserving the building’s character, and delivering long-term performance.

Applying spray polyurethane foam on The Foundry’s historic roof

Project Challenges

  • The building is historic (1870s), so preservation was a top priority — work couldn’t drastically alter the building’s look
  • The existing roof had deteriorated and was prone to leaks, exposing the interior to weather risk
  • The team needed a durable solution that would protect the building while aligning with its architectural character
  • The roof required a system that would adhere well, seal seams, and handle transitions without compromising aesthetics

Our Solution

  • Thoroughly cleaned and prepped the existing roof substrate to ensure adhesion
  • Applied spray polyurethane foam (SPF) to build a seamless, continuous layer that restores insulation and water protection
  • Over the foam, installed a high-performance silicone coating system to reflect UV and add durability
  • Embedded granules into the coating in key areas to improve resistance and longevity
  • Sealed all penetrations, flashing details, and transitions to maintain a watertight, monolithic surface
  • Preserved the building’s historic character by using minimally invasive techniques and careful detailing
